Episode 3, Season 4: Teliko
From 1993 – 2002, FBI special agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) investigated cases linked to the paranormal. Think ghosts, space aliens and other unexplainable mysteries.
Surprise. Several episodes contain refugee-related themes. Who knew?
Check out the episode Teliko, which chronicles a few days in the life of a soft spoken recent arrival, Samuel Aboah. The way he says “thank you” for everything will make your heart melt. His caseworker, or as he refers to himself, his immigration officer, promises that he’ll help Samuel bring his whole family (even cousins!) to the U.S. once Samuel becomes a citizen. There’s just one problem – Samuel has brought something very dark and evil with him to Philadelphia.
When Mulder goes to see the diplomat from Burkina Faso looking for answers, he learns of an old folk tale of the Bambara people – the Teliko, nocturnal “spirits of the air.” Don’t watch this episode alone – it might just scare the pancreas right out of you! We admit, this series might sacrifice some factual accuracy for entertainment purposes, but still. The X-files! Check it out.
