K’naan is a Somali Canadian who fled civil war with his family as a refugee. An online bio quotes him as saying that, “My experiences aren’t just mine. It’s just that I can articulate them in English.”
From the power of soccer (Wavin’ Flag) to traveling toward safety (The Dusty Foot Philosopher) and facing down immigrant stereotypes (I Come Prepared – my favorite), his lyrics capture many aspects of the refugee experience with catchy beats, poetic lyrics and collaborations with other major name musicians. He raps in English and Somali.
