Published in 2007, The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears, by Dinaw Mengetsu, takes place in the Logan Circle neighborhood of Washington, DC. The protagonist, an Ethiopian immigrant, runs his own small business, but still feels like an outsider and misses “home”.
It’s a bit dated because the pending neighborhood gentrification in the story has already happened. The long struggle our clients face to achieve full economic and community integration still resonates.
