Sweetness in the Belly paints a vivid picture of Harar, Ethiopia, which has long been at the top of my travel wishlist. The protagonist is a Muslim scholar who is actually a refugee several times before landing in England. While dealing with grief and trauma, she struggles to find a place for her expertise, experience and beliefs in a climate of rising anti-immigrant sentiment. She finds her place – and a sense of peace – in helping other refugees.
There’s a twist that makes the whole story resonate even more, but I’m not going to tell you what it is.
Let me know what you think.
